CAMBRIDGESHIRE, Cambridge, James Burleigh, David Hood's Penny, 1799, HOBSON • CAMBRIDGE • CARRIER, Hobson on horseback right, DIED 1630 AGED 86 in exergue in two lines, rev. JAMES BURLEIGH
The Pritchard Collection of 18th Century Provincial Tokens and Commemorative Medals
James Burleigh operated wagons between Cambridge and London, putting up at the Bull Inn on Bishopsgate Street. It can therefore be understood why Burleigh chose the well-respected figure of Tobias Hobson to feature on his Penny.
Tobias Hobson (1544-1631) is remembered as Cambridge's most famous townsperson. He succeeded to the business of his father, as a carrier of heavy goods and people between Cambridge and London. He kept a large stable of horses and as a result introduced the expression 'Hobson's choice' into the English language; it was Hobson's strong belief that only the most well rested horse should be put to work.
Only forty-eight pennies were struck in copper and six in silver.
