The Order was established in September 1916 and is awarded to officers only for exceptional deeds on the battlefield. It is the highest ranking Romanian military Order. A 3-Class Order, the Second Class was awarded just 76 times (of which 13 of these were to units) during the period of this Type of Insignia.

It was re-instituted by the President of Romania in 2000 and continues to be awarded.
