(x) Netherlands, Kingdom, Military Order of William, breast Badge, 50mm including crown suspension x 32mm, silver, silver-gilt and enamel, silver mark to loop, enamel cracking and chipping, nearly very fine and a good early Badge
The Military Order of William is the oldest and most senior honour of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, being named after St. William of Gellone, 1st Prince of Orange. Instituted on 30 April 1815, it has to date only been bestowed in four Classes on a shade over 5,800 times. Comparable with the Legion of Honour but far less often awarded, it is open to everyone regardless of rank or nobility - not only to Dutch military, but also to foreigners. To date, membership in the Order is extremely rarely awarded, and only for exceptional bravery in battle.
The Order was bestowed upon British Officers during the Napoleonic Wars, including none other than General Sir Colin Halkett (Medals sold in these Rooms in July 2024).
