Ronald Taylor Whitehorn was born in 1883 at Whitley Bay, Northumberland and was apprenticed in Newcastle by 1904. By the outbreak of the Great War he was an architect and surveyor and served in Egypt from August 1915. Serving in France with the 11th Divisional Signal Company from 8 July 1916, Whitehorn was advanced Lance-Corporal shortly before the Gazette entry of his M.M., after which the following appeared in the Army & Navy Gazette of 2 December 1917:
'Lce.-Corpl. Whitehorn, R.E., who has been awarded the Military Medal for conspicuous bravery with the Eleventh Division in France, is the youngest son of Mr. Augustus Whitehorn, solicitor, of North Shields and Whitley Bay. Lce.-Corpl. Whitehorn, who was well-known locally amongst Rugby players, joined up shortly after the outbreak of war, and has served in Gallipoli, Egypt, and for the past sixteen months in France.'
The gallant Whitehorn added a Bar to his M.M. for good measure before War's end and returned home.
