Charles Russell was a native of Tekley, Yorkshire and enlisted on 7 September 1914. He entered the war in France on 15 July 1915 where the Battalion saw heavy action, being present on the Somme at Ypres and during the German Spring Offensive. Russell likely won his M.M. for services during the latter but was wounded during the end of that offensive and was invalided from service on 24 July 1918.
