The 1916 D.C.M. awarded to Private J. T. Byrne, 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards, for his gallantry in bombing the enemy's advanced posts

D.C.M. London Gazette 11 January 1916, the original citation states:
'For conspicuous gallantry and good work when in charge of the company bombers during the last three months. He has more than once gone out voluntarily at night and bombed the enemy's advanced posts.'
John Thomas Byrne was a 23-year-old labourer from Middlesborough when he enlisted in the Coldstream Guards on 16 August 1911 at Darlington. During the Great War, he served with the 1st Battalion and disembarked at the Western Front on 10 January 1915. At some stage, Byrne later joined the Royal Engineers from whence he was transferred to Class 'B' Army Reserve on 25 February 1919, he is entitled to a 1914-15 Star Trio; sold together with copied research.
