Charles Ernest Sydney Marks enlisted with the 16th Light Anti-Aircraft Battery on 18 April 1939 and transferred to the 283 (City of London Yeomanry) Light Anti-Aircraft Battery on 13 September 1941. This unit joined the 1st Airbourne Division in July 1942, being redesignated the 1st Airlanding Light Anti-Aircraft Battery in December, with the nickname 'The Roughriders'.
Marks saw service with them until they were disbanded in late February 1944, going on to join the 149 (Sherwood Foresters) Light Anti-Aircraft Battery on 23 February. Marks would have seen action with them in France from August 1944 when they formed part of the 107 Anti-Aircraft Brigade; sold together with copied research.
