(x) Four: Private C. G. Buchanan, South African Education Corps

1939-45 Star; Africa Star; War Medal 1939-45; Africa Service Medal 1939-45, all officially impressed replacement issues named '186759 C. G. Buchanan', very fine (4)

Charles George Buchanan was born at Benoni on 29 January 1922 and prior to service had been a painter. Enlisting with the Union of South African Defence Force, S.A.E.C. on 25 October 1940, he embarked at Mombassa on Ascanus on 28 June 1941 for the Middle East and disembarked at Suez on 11 July 1941, serving with the Motor Transport, General List. He transferred to the S.A.E.C. on 18 November 1942 and was discharged as being medically unfit on 14 January 1944. His original medals were despatched to him on 12 February 1952. Sadly on 16 July 1980 the original medals were reported stolen in a house robbery and a set of replacements were issued by the South African Defence Force to him; sold with copies of service records, M.I.C., affidavit reporting medals stolen, and re-issue document of the medals from the S.A.D.F.
