Thomas Shergold was born at Salisbury, Wiltshire in 1830 and attested with the Grenadier Guards on 8 November 1848 with the number 5592. He served for six years however his time with the 'Army of the East' was the only period spent abroad. The Grenadier Guards saw heavy action at the Battle of the Alma on 20 September 1854, advancing up the Hill after the Light Division to retake the Russian Battery.

Shergold's service papers state: 'He was present at the Battle of Alma where he lost his left arm'. Invalided from service he later became a Chelsea Pensioner Outpatient and worked as a postman; sold together with copied census and service papers.
