Kabul to Kandahar Star 1880 (413 Act Bombr T. Perry C.2nd Brigade R.A.), nearly extremely fine

Thomas Catlow was born in Clitheroe, Lancashire in July 1854 and enlisted at Preston under the false name Thomas Perry in March 1873. Posted to the 2nd Brigade in 1877 he was promoted Acting Bombardier with them in March 1880 and entered the war in Afghanistan with 'C' Battery that same month.

He joined the detachment which was stationed at the Kalat-i-Gilzai Fort and when Roberts began his famous march from Kabul to Kandahar they joined him. Arriving at Kandahar in September with the rest of the Army, they were deployed opposite Gundi Mullah Sahibdad and kept up a heavy bombardment. The unit suffered three casualties during the fighting and afterwards Catlow was promoted Bombardier in November 1880.

Reduced to Gunner again three years later as the result of a disciplinary infraction, he served a further five years in India and in 1890 declared his true name was Thomas Catlow. He suffered a knee injury on 4 April 1891 and was discharged two months later, listing his intended place of residence as 16 Castle Street, Clitheroe; sold together with copied research.
