A total of 90 no clasp Ashantee 1873-74 medals were issued to H.M.S. Beacon.
Joseph Yull was born at Chelsea in 1852 and enlisted on 1 January 1873 with the number 51748, his first service afloat was with Beacon that same year. He saw service in the Ashantee Campaign whilst with her and continued to serve, being advanced Leading Seaman in 1875 with Hector and Petty Officer Class I with Tamar just two years later. At that stage however he began a cycle of promotion and demotion which saw him shift to Leading Seaman with Charybdis the same year and Able Seaman with Hart in December.
His service records note several good conduct badges forfeited and at least one charge of desertion against his name. In spite of this Yull served on until 1889 when he was taken to the Royal Naval Hospital Haslar and invalided from service.
