George Grote Hannen was born on 7 January 1836 at Beckenham, Kent, one of fourteen children of James Hannen, a prominent London businessman. George was commissioned in the Royal Artillery on 24 September 1855 and later served at Canton, being present at the capture of Canton. Hannen was present at Sinho, Tangko, the capture of the Taku Forts and the surrender of Peking. He was advanced Major on 4 February 1874 and later retired with a pension on 1 July 1877. Hannen died prematurely at Marseille, France on 2 June 1882 and is buried in the family plot at West Norwood Cemetery and Crematorium; sold together with copied research.
