(x) Indian Mutiny 1857-59, 1 clasp, Central India (Capt. W. D. Grant, 50th Madras N.I.), good very fine

William Davis Grant was born at Inverness, Scotland on 11 March 1817, the son of Sarah and John Grant of the Royal Navy. He was appointed Ensign with the Madras Establishment on 13 January 1834, being posted to the 50th Madras Native Infantry in 1835. He saw action in the Goomsoor campaign 1836-37 against the rebellious Rajah of Goomsoor, being promoted Lieutenant during the campaign on 27 January 1837.

Advanced Captain in 1847 Grant was stationed with the Regiment on the outbreak of the Indian Mutiny, seeing service with the Saugor and Nerbudda Field Force under Brigadier-General Whitlock. Grant went on to reach the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel, retiring in 1861 and dying on 11 December 1890 at Rugby.
