India General Service 1854-95, 1 clasp, Perak (S. Martin. Ord: H.M.S "Modeste."), minor contact wear, very fine

Stewart Martin was born at Ballycullen, Dublin on 12 February 1856 and enlisted into the Royal Navy on 1 January 1873 with the service number 42974. Joining the crew of Modeste on 1 January 1874 as a Boy 1st Class he reached his majority with her on 12 February of that year. He was serving as Ordinary Seaman when the vessel took part in the Perak War in Northwest Malaysia.

Posted to the troopship Tamar in May 1877, he was advanced Sailmaker's Crew, a rank he served in until the next year when he was further advanced Sailmaker's Mate on 13 March 1878. Martin continued to serve until September 1886 when he joined the Coastguard at Cairnryan, Scotland as a Boatman.

Promoted Commanding Boatman on 21 November 1889 he kept serving at various posts in Scotland including Gourock and Fort Patrick. Martin was finally discharged on 6 February 1896; sold together with copied service papers and medal roll.
