John Prior was born at Stockton on 14 November 1894. He joined the Royal Naval Reserve and was allocated to the Patrol Service on 4 June 1915. He served as a Stoker for the duration of the Great War on H.M.S. Maidstone which led the 8th Submarine Flotilla to its war station at Harwich in the 1914 mobilization. She remained the principal depot ship for the offensive submarine force at Harwich for the duration of the hostilities. Maidstone's Flotilla was re-established as the 9th Submarine Flotilla in August 1916. Prior received his Long Service & Good Conduct Medal on 6 November 1931, and he was discharged on 28 March 1935.
Albert Cole born on 25 March 1887 was a machinist from Middlesbrough when he joined the Royal Navy on 7 January 1907. During the Great War he served on H.M.S. Princess Royal from 30 December 1913 to 26 October 1915 taking part in the Battles of Heligoland Bight and Dogger Bank. From 28 January 1916 until the war's end, he served on H.M.S. Malaya taking part in the Battle of Jutland. Demobilised on 1 June 1919 he joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 2 June 1919.
