Samuel Libby was born at Looe, Cornwall on 23 August 1881 and was a seaman upon his joining the Royal Navy on 11 July 1904. During the Great War he served with Albion from 1 August 1914 until 18 May 1916, which saw her share heavily in the Dardanelles Campaign (1914-15 Star Trio). Thence aboard Wallington from 1 June-30 September 1917 and Halcyon from 1 October 1917 to February 1919. This last vessel was noted as 'perhaps the smallest and least formidable vessel that ever crept into the 'Navy List'", but managed to score the 'kill' on U-27 on 29 July 1917.
Libby thence went to serve with distinction with the Coast Guard on the South Coast, as Leading Boatman at the Stations at Hastings, St Leonards & Bexhill until his discharge in March 1923, having been awarded his L.S. & G.C. in March 1920.
