The 1943 Home Defence C.B.E. group of four awarded to Colonel F. J. Wymer, Southern Railway Home Guard, late Royal Garrison Artillery

Francis John Wymer was born on 6 December 1898 and was educated at Merton Court and Etham College. During the Great War he was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on 1 October 1917 and served in France from November 1917. Having risen to the rank of Captain, he retired in 1919 and thence joined the South-East & Central Railways.

Wymer was thence Assistant to the Traffic Manager of the Southern Railway in 1932, Marine Manager at Dover in 1934, Assistant Continental Superintendant in 1938, Assistant to the General Manager in 1942 and Assistant Chief Regional Officer, British Railways 1951-55. During the Second World War he served as a Colonel in the Southern Railway Home Guard, based at Woking and was then commissioned into the Royal Engineers in January 1944. Having taken his C.B.E. for his work in the Birthday Honours of 1943, he had published the pamphlet Action to be taken by Southern Railway Home Guard in the event of Invasion in August 1941 (National Railway Museum No. 3159180). Having re-married in 1948, the Colonel lived at Hoyle Farm Cottage, Beare Green, Surrey and East Lodge, Chislehurst, Kent. He died in March 1976; sold together with copied research.
