William Strickland was serving in the 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots when he was subject to a gas attack on 21 March 1918 and hospitalised. An entry on the Regiment on the website of The John Grey Centre states of this period:
'In March of 1918 the battalion was in line standing off the advancing Germans. Their ability to entrench and wire as well as fight was all that saved them several times: over 200 casualties were recorded in the space of five days. In April they lost another 174 in similar fliud fighting.'
The Battalion War Diary for that day has the unit under bombardment some four seperate times, although this may been that they were under fire for the entire day. Strickland was hospitalised again in August for an 'Old Wound' to his right arm, as this is unlikley to have been caused by gas it appears he had been injured previously; sold together with hospital entry forms, war diary extracts and a blog post from the website of the John Grey Centre.
