William Johnson was stationed in Egypt in 1915 with the Berkshire Yeomanry as part of the newly formed 6th Mounted Brigade and saw action at the First, Second, and Third Battles of Gaza which took place over a number of months in 1917. Johnson and his Regiment were also present at El Mughar, Abu Shusheh Ridge, and Zeitoun Ridge before the 6th Brigade was withdrawn from the front line for the final time in November of that year. In April 1918, together with the Royal Bucks Hussars, they joined to form the 101st Battalion Machine Gun Corps and were ordered to France the following month and were stationed there until being disembodied in February 1919; sold together with copied research.

Johnson is confirmed upon the roll for the War and Victory Medals, however, he is not entitled to a 1914-15 Star.
