Pair: Private G. R. Benson, 19th Hussars, who died of wounds in 1917
British War and Victory Medals (46530 Pte. G. R. Benson. 19-Hrs), good very fine (2)
George R. Benson was born at Hull in 1893 and enlisted prior to the Great War, appearing on the 1911 census at Wellington Lines Aldershot with the 1st Cavalry Brigade, 19th Hussars. Given that Benson is not listed as entitled to Star it is likely he joined the reserves before the war and was mobilised for service in 1914.
The Regiment joined the 9th Cavalry Brigade in 1915 and remained with them for the rest of the war, seeing action on the Somme in 1916 and at Arras in 1917. They were again on the front during the Battle of Cambrai in November 1917 and Benson was severely wounded in action. He died just four days into the Battle on 24 November 1917 and is commemorated upon the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval.
