Leonard George Fishburn was born at York on 7 August 1899,the son of Alfred and Alice Fishburn of 13 Rosebery Street Leeman Road York. Enlisting with the Royal Navy on 28 August 1917 he was promoted Able Seaman on 23 May 1918 he was posted to H.M.S. Glory at Archangel, North Russia on 6 October 1918.
This warship had been the flagship of the British North Russia Squadron based at Archangel and was still there at the time of the Revolution in 1917. When Fishburn arrived the ship was a based for the Naval and Marine forces supporting the Allied Intervention in North Russia. Sailors from this vessel were used for supply and keeping order in Archangel as well as providing crew for the gunships which served on the Dvina river and gun crews for naval guns being used in support.
Fishburn left Glory on 19 April 1919 and returned to Britain, being discharged on 22 June 1919. He returned to Yorkshire settling at 20 Morpeth Street, Kingston-Upon-Hull where he appears on the 1939 Census. His job at the time is listed as 'Relief Chief Lineman Signal-Telegraph Dept Lner, Railway Signalling Maintenance & Repair Staff' doubtless a critial role during the Second World War. He died at Beverley, Humberside in June 1988; sold together with copied service papers and census data.
