Ernest George Ings was born at Portsmouth on 21 April 1898 and enlisted as Boy Class II on 12 September 1913. Posted to Galatea on 19 November 1914 he was further advanced Boy Telegraphist with her on 3 July 1915.
It was with this vessel that he saw service at the Battle of Jutland, where she steamed into action as the flagship of 1st Light Cruiser Squadron. It was Galatea which first sighted the German Fleet and she also sustained the first hit of the battle. A shell from Elbig struck her however fortunately failed to detonate, she survived the battle intact and Ings left her the next year for the Battleship Glorious.
Seeing no further action during the war Ings was to serve with submarines post-war. Notably H31 and L69 however he transferred to wireless stations ashore by 1923. He was to see no Second World War service, being invalided due to ill health on 5 September 1934; sold together with copied research and a Jutland Commemorative Medal.
