Stephen Johns was born at Pembroke Dock, Wales on 11 May 1863 and enlisted as Shipwright on 5 March 1890. Promoted Leading Shipwright on 1 September 1891 with Boadicea and later Carpenter's Mate in 1896.
Johns was serving in this role aboard Walleroo as part of the Auxiliary Squadron from 21 February 1900 when the ship was deployed for service in the Boxer Rebellion. After the conflict he continued to serve until March 1912 when he was pensioned. However Johns was not to enjoy his retirement, returning to service on the outbreak of the Great War. Posted to the torpedo school Vernon as Shipwright he was not to serve for long, being invalided on 19 October 1914; sold together with a copied photograph of H.M.S. Walleroo and service record.
