One of 263 Relief of Pekin clasps awarded to Terrible.
Timothy Walter Kemp was born at Tunbridge Wells, Kent on 24 July 1878 and joined the Royal Navy on 8 November 1897 with the Service Number 286414. He joined Terrible on 18 December 1898 and was present with her on the Cape of Good Hope Station on the outbreak of the Anglo-Boer War. Kemp was one of the large number of crewmen who received a no clasp medal for his efforts.
With the stabilisation of events in South Africa and the outbreak of the Boxer Rebellion, Terrible was posted to the new conflict. This time Kemp was not to remain with the ship but joined the shore party as Terrible once again sent both guns and a Naval Brigade ashore many being present for the Battle of Tientsin.
Kemp survived the fighting and was to serve for several more years until 1911 when he was discharged due to help problems. Returning to Service on 2 August 1911 he served until 28 August but was discharged again due to health, this short service took place entirely ashore and it is likely he was hospitalised for the duration. It does not appear that Kemp was entitled to any Great War medals; sold together with copied medal rolls and service record.
