James Willis Vosper was born at Liskeard, Cornwall on 24 February 1861 and enlisted on 24 March 1885 as Stoker Class II. He served with a number of ships throughout the 1880s and 1890s, being advanced Leading Stoker with Aurora and Chief Stoker with Devastation in 1897. Joining Doris in November that same year Vosper was with her during the Anglo-Boer War although did not serve with the Naval Brigades during that time.
Pensioned in 1907 Vosper returned to service during the Great War but was not to serve afloat. Instead he was posted to the school ship Defiance which he served with until the end of the war, being demobilised on 2 April 1919; sold together with a copied picture of Doris and service record.
