Charles Connell was born at Marylebone, London and was a shoemaker by trade, having had served with the 3rd Battalion Royal Fusiliers Militia before he enlisted into the Gordon Highlanders at Aberdeen on 1 August 1892. He served in the East Indies from 27 September 1894-23 September 1899 (Medal & 3 clasps).

Connell then saw service in South Africa from 24 September 1899, being severely wounded at Ladysmith on 6 January 1900 by a gunshot wound to the back and arm. Later on 5 November 1900, Connell was awarded 10 days imprisonment by the Commanding Officer of 7th Brigade Depot Pietermaritsburg for:

(i)
Being Out of Bounds.

(ii)
Selling Kit in the Native Camp.

(iii)
Using obscene language to an Officer.

Released on 30 November 1900, Connell completed his service in South Africa on 26 July 1904 (King's Medal & 2 clasps).
