James Wells was born in Bethnal Green, London circa 1851 and enlisted at Canterbury with the 19th Hussars in September 1870 after working as a painter. He was stationed in England before being posted to Egypt, and during that time married his wife Emma Jane Broadridge at Preston on 14 July 1872 and lived at their house in Brighton. Wells re-engaged with the 19th Hussars in May 1882 to complete a total service of 21 years ahead of being sent to Egypt in November of that year, where he participated in the Sudan and Nile campaigns before returning home in June 1886. He was discharged in September 1891 in consequence of his having completed the second period of his limited engagement, with his conduct cited as being "very good"; sold together with copied research.
