Pair: Leading Stoker J. Holwell, Royal Navy, who served aboard Duke of Wellington during the Bombardment of Sveaborg

John Holwell was born at South Sydenham, Devon - now known at Sydenham Damerel - on 18 March 1825. Enlisting with the Duke of Wellington as a Stoker on 12 January 1853 he saw service in the Baltic Campaign with her during the Crimean War. First during the Baltic Campaign of 1854 and then the next year at the bombardment of Sveaborg when she served as the Flagship for Admiral Dundas.

Transferring to Leopard on 22 November 1857 he was promoted Leading Stoker with her. Holwell saw further service with a number of vessels, including Marlborough, Scylla and Achilles with his final posting being Black Prince in November 1871. He received his pension on 26 May 1873; sold together with original service and discharge papers.
