George Turl was born at Portsea, Hampshire on 21 December 1823 and enlisted with Boadicea on 4 November 1841. He joined Prince Regent as an Able Seaman in 1847 and was advanced Yeoman of Signals with her soon afterwards. He joined the unarmoured screw ship Neptune on 7 March 1854, a little over a week before she left for the Baltic on 16 March 1854. Turl was to serve with her until November when he was posted away to Monarch. He continued to serve for some time, joining the Royal Yacht Victoria and Albert and serving with her until 31 December 1864. His service papers confirm entitlement to the Baltic Medal.
