Henry Hurd was born in 1821 in Exmouth, Devon and attested with the 14th Light Dragoons at age 19 in Dorchester. He was later promoted to Corporal in June 1842 before being tried by Court Martial and reduced to Private the next year. Hurd served with the 14th Hussars in the Army of the Punjab from November 1848 to May 1849, during which time he took part in the charge at Ramnuggar and was engaged in fighting at the Battles of Chilianwala and Goojerat, also being present on special service at the surrender of the Sikh Army. Hurd found himself again promoted to Corporal in 1851 but was reduced to Private just a few months later after again being tried by Court Martial.
Hurd served with the right wing of the unit in the 2nd Brigade of the Central India Field Force from November 1857 until June 1858. They saw considerable action in India, including the capture of Jhansi, the Battles of Koonch and Calpi, the recapture of Gwalior, among other engagements. Hurd was discharged at Newbridge in August 1860 due to health complications caused by his service in India; sold together with copied research.
