Birks Memorial Bar (Std. W. H. Maynard R.C.N.R. Died in His Country's Service 22 Oct. 1940), good very fine
William Henry Maynard was born at Halifax, Nova Scotia. He joined the Canadian Navy in September 1939 and had been a Steward on Lady Nelson before joining the Margaree. On 20 October 1940 she left Londonderry for Canada with a five-ship convoy, OL.8, and two days later was lost in collision with the freighter Port Fairy, with the loss of 142 lives. She had been patrolling out front of the convoy in poor weather and had slowed to allow them to join her, when she cut in front of the Port Fairy, who slowed at the final moment. It was too late as she was sliced in half just after 0125hrs, giving little chance to the majority of the crew who were in their bunks. It was one of the first large losses to the Canadian Navy during the Second World War.
