William Ward Perry was born on 26 June 1896 and working as an apprentice bricklayer when he enlisted in the Royal Engineers on 28 December 1915, subsequently transferring to the 15th Battalion or 'O' Battalion, Tank Corps.

Fred Perry served in the 5th Battalion or 'E' Battalion, Tank Corps.
