James Wilson (Jimmy) Leggat was born in 1883, a native of King Edward, Abderdeenshire, Scotland and later qualified as an engineer.
Leggat left Scotland and emigrated to Burma. His wanderlust was most likely inherited from his father, who spent time in Ceylon as an Assistant Manager of a tea plantation. Enlisting in the Rangoon Volunteer Corps, Leggat was commissioned on 28 February 1919 in the Indian Mounted Transport and later served as Captain in the Supply & Transport Corps. He served in India and the North West Frontier-Baluchistan Field Force, 16 May-9 June 1919: 3rd Afghan War, 1 July-12 August 1919: Kohat Kurrum Force, 13 August-30 October 1919; Waziristan Field Force, 31 October 1919-1 April 1920.
Leggat died in South Africa on 4 March 1944; a letter from his wife (included in the lot) states at the time he was the Power Station Superintendent in Pretoria. One of the workers fell into a deep vat of water and Leggat dived in to save him, catching pneumonia as a result of his heroic efforts.
