Herbert George Waterworth was born at Luton, Bedfordshire in 1907 and attested with the Royal Tank Corps at Winchester on 14 April 1923. Joining the 15th/19th Hussars two months later he served with them on the Northwest Frontier. Waterworth's medal was initially issued to him as a Trumpeter but was later re-issued as Trooper, the rank in which he was in fact serving. Joining the Army Reserve in 1932, Waterworth was discharged in 1945, suggesting that he was mobilised for service during the Second World War.
