Africa General Service 1902-56, 1 clasp, Somaliland 1902-04 (F. Mountjoy, A.B., H.M.S. Cossack.), light edge bruise, very fine

One of 215 Somaliland 1902-04 clasps issued to H.M.S. Coassack.

Freddy Mountjoy was born at Marhamchurch, Cornwall on 24 January 1876 and worked as a seaman prior to enlisting on 1 March 1894 with the service number 178542. Promoted Able Seaman aboard Undaunted on 12 March 1896 he was posted to Cossack in March 1900. This cruiser was one of the warships which patrolled off the coasts of Somaliland and Aden catching gunrunners smuggling weapons to the rebelling tribes. This was to prove Mountjoy's last posting afloat as he went ashore in 1903 and remained there for two years. He was invalided on 15 July 1905; sold together with copied census data, medal roll and service record.
