Ronald McDonald Harvey was born at Govan, Lanarkshire, Scotland in 1878 and attested with the Cameron Highlanders on 12 March 1897. He served in Egypt and the Sudan with them from October 1897, seeing action during the British re-conquest of the Sudan. The Camerons were at the front of the British advance during the Battle of The Atbara, they were issued billhooks to pull apart the Sudanese zeriba along with blankets and scaling ladders. They faced a bloody hand-to-hand struggle on the other side and lost fifteen killed and forty-five wounded, of whom a further five died afterwards. They saw further action at the Battle of Omdurman which ended the campaign.

Harvey remained in Sudan until 1900 when he was posted to South Africa for service in the Anglo Boer War. Earning clasps for Johannesburg, Diamond Hill and Wettbergen he was also awarded the King's South Africa with two clasps. Returning to Britain in 1903 Harvey was posted to the Army Reserve in 1904 and served with them until 1909 when he was discharged; sold together with copied service papers.
