James Tesselaar Goldsbury was born on 28 October 1867 at Knysna, Cape. He was the son of Samuel Goldsbury, a civil commissioner and resident magistrate of the Knysna District. Goldsbury took part in the first expedition into Mashonaland in 1890 under Colonel Pennefather in the British South Africa Company's Police. He attested on 4 March 1890 and was posted to 'E' Troop, where he served as Orderly Room Clerk to Captain A. G. Leonard in December 1890 at Fort Tuli. He was promoted Corporal on 17 December 1890 and is noted as being discharged on 30 October 1891, however, there is a note indicating he was still serving in May 1892. After the close of his military career, Goldsbury became manager of the Johannesburg Board of Executors & Trust Company Ltd. and later died on 10 November 1940 at Norman Nursing Home, Johannesburg; sold with assorted paperwork, including an image of him at camp.
