Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, dated reverse, 1 clasp, El-Teb_Tamaai (1607 Pte W. Ward. 1/York & Lanc: R:), pitting, nearly very fine
William Ward was born at Drumhome, Donegal, Ireland in 1844 and enlisted at Glasgow on 19 November 1868. He served in India for over 13 years before being posted to Sudan with the Yorkshire and Lancashire Regiment for service in the Gordon Relief Expedition.
They saw action at both El-Teb and Tamaai, the latter being notable for the square in which the Battalion was formed breaking under attack from Mahdist warriors. The Battalion had halted to give fire while the front of the square advanced creating a gap which the Mahdists exploited. The result was a vicious hand-to-hand engagement which only ended when the second British Square arrived and drove back the Dervishes.
Ward survived both actions unharmed and he retired on 13 January 1890, listing his intended place of residence as Ballyshannon, Donegal; sold together with copied research.
