James Abbott was born at St. Andrews, Fife in 1857 and attested with the 79th Highlanders on 6 June 1876. He saw service with this unit for a year before transferring to the 42nd (Royal Highlanders) Foot on Malta in 1877. Advanced Sergeant he was Court-Marshalled in 1881 and lost his rank, joining the Army Reserve in early 1882.
Mobilised for service on 2 August 1882 Abbott was posted to the 1st Battalion, Royal Highlanders and saw service with them in Egypt, notably in the Battle of Tel-El-Kebir. Here the Battalion was on the right of the Highland Brigade's line, facing heavy opposition they were initially stalled before support from the King's Royal Rifle Corps came up from the Divisional Reserve. After the action Abbott returned to the Reserve, from which he was later discharged in 1888.
