China 1856-60, 1 clasp, Pekin 1860 (Jas McCarthy, 99th Regt), contact marks, very fine

James McCarthy was born in 1835 in County Tipperary, Ireland and attested with the 53rd Foot (Shropshire) at County Limerick aged 18, with service number 3624. He joined his Regiment in India in 1854 and later participated in both the Relief of Lucknow and the Siege of Lucknow. McCarthy volunteered to the 99th Foot (Lanarkshire), with new service number 1334, in February 1860 and embarked for China with his new unit that same month. Together with a wing of the Regiment, he embarked for the Cape of Good Hope in March 1865 before returning to England in 1868. McCarthy was discharged in 1871 after having served 18 years, and received a Long Service and Good Conduct medal with a £5 gratuity that same year; sold together with copied research.
