Indian Mutiny 1857-59, no clasp (2102 John Crowley, 70th Regt), contact marks, very fine
John Crowley was born in Whitechapel in 1826 and attested with the 70th Foot (Surrey) in London at age 17. He later served in India from 1847 until 1861, where in 1857 the unit disarmed the native troops after the Mutiny of the 55th N.I. at Peshawar. Crowley was posted to New Zealand in 1861 and remained there until 1864, during which he was awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct medal with a £5 gratuity. Returning to England in 1864, Crowley was discharged the following year at Netley due to vision loss after serving for 21 years and 5 months; sold together with copied research.
