India General Service 1854-95, 1 clasp, Burma 1885-7 (No 2257 Private John Sugrue, 2nd Bn Royal Scots Fusrs.), very fine

John Sugrue was born at Tralee, Kerry, Ireland. He was a labourer and had previously seen service in the Kerry Militia before attesting into the 70th Brigade Depot on 5 September 1877, later transferring to the 61st Brigade on 18 February 1879.

Sugrue embarked for South Africa on 22 February 1879 and is entitled to the South Africa Medal with clasp 1879. Later he was posted to Burma for service in the Third Anglo-Burmese War.

He was tried by Court Martial on numerous occasions due to his consumption of drink and was transferred to the Army Reserve in October 1887. His service papers note 'Conduct and character while with the colours: Bad addicted to drink'.
