India General Service 1854-95, 1 clasp, Pegu (Jas. Page. Qr. Mr. "Winchester"), good very fine

Provenance:
Baldwin's, April 1971.

James Page was born at Chatham in 1815 and enlisted in the Royal Navy on 16 April 1836 with the rank of Ordinary Seaman. Rapidly advanced to Captain of the Mizzen Top he joined the Brigantine Dolphin as Ship's Cook on 9 April 1840 but was invalided from her with fever off West Africa on 21 October. Returning to Service with Satellite on 17 November 1848 as Quartermaster, Page was later posted to Winchester in March 1852.

The next month the second Anglo-Burmese War broke out and Winchester was part of the fleet sent to secure British interests. Page went with her but did not live to see the end of the conflict being listed as 'died on board' on 1 November 1852. It is possible he died of wounds but far more likely he was killed by disease which ran rife amongst the British in the region. His will shows a list of beneficiaries including a wife, Mary Page and has him as a resident of Portsea; sold together with copied Medal Roll, Seamen's Will, and typed research listing sources including the Muster roll of Winchester.
