Waterloo 1815 (John Ager: 2nd Batt. Grenad. Guards.), suspension clip loose on disk, polished and contact wear overall, nearly very fine

Two men by the name John Ager of the Grenadier Guards appear on the Waterloo Medal Roll, one serving in Lieutenant-Colonel Sir W. Burgh's Company, 2nd Battalion, and the other in Lieutenant-Colonel Pack's Company, Light Company 2nd Battalion.

The 2nd Battalion of the 1st Foot Guards played an important role in the Battle of Waterloo on 18 June 1815. The Light Company, 2nd Battalion, were engaged in the heroic defence of the Hougoumont Chateau, and later rejoined the rest at the St. Jean Ridge. Napoleon deployed his elite Imperial Guard at a critical point of Battle, with the British 1st Foot Guards bearing the brunt of this attack. However, they stood fast and fired volley after volley, defeating the Grenadiers of the Imperial Guard. The 1st Foot Guards suffered 15 officers and 472 men killed and wounded over the course of the day.

In recognition of their momentous achievement, by Royal Proclamation of the Prince Regent, the 1st Foot Guards were re-titled the Grenadier Regiment of Foot Guards and adopted the bearskin hats worn by French Imperial Guard.
