John Chapman was born at Drumbeg, County Antrim and was a cooper when he enlisted in the Royal Artillery on 28 December 1806. He served with Wellington at the battle of Vimiera before being evacuated to the Iberian Peninsula and consequently didn't take part in the action at Corunna. Rejoining his unit, he was present at the battle of Salamanca on 22 July 1812. He subsequently took part in the retreat from Burgos where he was severely wounded, losing his left leg. Unfit for further service he was sent home and discharged from the Royal Artillery on 1 May 1813. Chapman lived to receive his medal and died circa 1863.
