Archibald Sinclair was born at Glasgow on 1 August 1885. He was an apprentice iron turner when he joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 1 August 1905 and allotted number 3657 for service during the Great War. His service records available online indicate that most of his war service was travelling between Scotland and the United States. He was demobilised on 4 April 1919 but immediately re-enrolled and was allotted a new number 3228 in which capacity he received his Long Service and Good Conduct medal which was presented to him on 5 July 1921.

He spent the bulk of his post war service aboard the SS Cameronia and latterly as Red Leader at Harland & Wolffe, shipbuilders in Glasgow.
