Frederick Brittain was born at Teddington, Middlesex and was an 18-year-old labourer when he enlisted in the Royal Fusiliers on 17 August 1899. He had earlier service with the Regiment in the Boer War attached to the 20th Mounted Infantry and was awarded the Queen's South Africa 1899-1902 medal with clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902 (note spelt Brittan on Q.S.A. roll).
