Early Letters
1812-15 entire letters (2) from the same correspondence from a shipman to his sister addressed to England, both with very interesting contents; the first dated 1812 (10 July) with ...I now sit down to write to you from on board the Malabar, a Company Cruiser of 20 Guns; at anchor in Rangoon River, abreast a Birmian town of that name; where we have been since the 19th of March and expect to remain till now on December.... The other letter 1815 ...My last was from Rangoon, I might have said the fag end of the World, which place we left the middle of August.... The 1812, believed to be the earliest letter from Burma, showing on the reverse a fine strike of the "Bengal/g.p.o./oct:/post paid" oval-framed handstamp and arrival c.d.s. (21.5.13), with London Ship Letter d.s. (20.5) on face. Photo
