Commercial Bank of Scotland Limited, [Top Pop] £100, 1st August 1940, serial number 11/Z 04005, founded in 1810, the Commercial Bank of Scotland saw continuous growth throughout the 19th century, establishing an extensive branch network across Scotland. The banknote currently available at auction belongs to a series widely recognised as one of the most finest examples of 20th-century Scottish currency.
Distinguished from its predecessors, this particular series introduces a novel element: a portrait of the bank's chairman adorning the front face, alongside the cherished frieze of allegorical figures, the enduring symbols of various pivotal industries in Scottish heritage, which has graced Scottish banknotes since the 1800s. The front of this banknote is adorned with the portrait of the bank's inaugural chairman, John Pitcairn. Meanwhile, on the reverse side, the image of the bank's headquarters takes center stage; a testament to the institution's significance and grandeur
