John Rennie (1761-1821), Scottish civil engineer notable for designing bridges, canals, docks and warehouses and for his pioneering use of structural cast-iron. In 1806 preparations begun for the construction of Bell Rock Lighthouse off the coast of Angus, Scotland, commissioned by the Northern Lighthouse Board. The tower was designed and construction was overseen by fellow Scottish civil engineer Robert Stevenson (1772-1850). Rennie was appointed by the board to superintend Stevenson's execution of the work. However, the unique location of the lighthouse at sea and at a great distance from London made this job extremely impractical and largely defunct. However, after his death claims were made by Rennie's son, Sir John Rennie, that the lighthouse had in fact been 'designed and built' by his father. This claim was to result in great hostility between the two families, a relationship that had previously been one of friendship and professional rivalry only a generation earlier. Although, this claim would continue to circulate, subsequent literature, notably 'The World's Lighthouses Before 1820' by Stevenson's relation Dr Alan Stevenson has succeeded in cementing Stevenson's role as designer and engineer of the project. On the death of Rennie his life and work were commemorated in this medallic form by W. Bain in the high relief style of the day. While during Stevenson's own lifetime he was commemorated in sculptural form by Samuel Joseph. This work was installed in the lighthouse in 1829 and later engraved by J. Syme.
